Lando Norris of the McLaren team faced criticism from former world champion Nico Rosberg for errors that cost him a chance at victory in the Belgian Grand Prix. Based on an in-depth analysis by SPORTRIK of official Formula 1 interviews, Rosberg compared Norris unfavorably to Lewis Hamilton, highlighting Norris’ lack of consistency. Consequently, this article examines Rosberg’s critique, Norris’ race dynamics, and their impact on the championship.

Norris started the race from pole position, but a delay of over an hour due to heavy rain disrupted the schedule. After four laps behind the safety car, Norris made a critical error exiting Turn 1, leaving him vulnerable to an overtake by teammate Oscar Piastri on the Kemmel Straight. As a result, he lost the lead and never regained close proximity to Piastri. Furthermore, a slow pit stop and an extra lap on wet tires as the track dried compounded his challenges.

Rosberg, in an official Formula 1 interview, highlighted three additional errors by Norris that cost valuable time. “He was doing qualifying lap after qualifying lap on the absolute edge, and then a couple of mistakes happened,” Rosberg noted. Consequently, Norris finished second, 3.4 seconds behind Piastri, who extended his championship lead from nine to 16 points. A Norris victory would have reduced the gap to just two points.

Rosberg contrasted Norris’ approach with that of Hamilton, suggesting that Hamilton would likely avoid such errors. “I question whether someone like Hamilton would have made three mistakes pushing like crazy in a race like that,” Rosberg said. He emphasized Hamilton’s consistency during high-pressure moments, or “Hammer Time,” as a key differentiator. Nevertheless, Rosberg acknowledged Norris’ efforts. “Hats off, Lando still did a good job this weekend,” he added. However, Norris’ recurring unforced errors this season, despite wins at the Red Bull Ring and Silverstone, remain a significant talking point.

Nico Rosberg criticized Lando Norris for costly errors at the Belgian Grand Prix, drawing an unfavorable comparison to Lewis Hamilton’s consistency. For this reason, Norris must focus on precision under pressure to close the championship gap to Piastri. Thus, improving consistency will be crucial for Norris in upcoming races.
