Formula 1 has unveiled the official calendar for the 2026 season, marking the 77th year of the world championship with a record-breaking 24 race series. Released on June 10, 2025, this announcement includes significant changes, such as the inclusion of the Madrid Grand Prix and the exclusion of Imola. Will this new schedule enhance F1’s global appeal?

The 2026 calendar introduces the Madrid Grand Prix on September 13, 2026, replacing Imola, which has been part of the schedule since 2020. Imola’s contract expired at the end of 2025 and was not renewed, as confirmed by local mayor Marco Panieri. Madrid, featuring a modern street circuit, is anticipated to attract fresh attention in Europe. The season will commence in Australia on March 8, 2026, and conclude in Abu Dhabi on December 6, 2026.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff welcomed the new calendar with an open mind, suggesting that Madrid’s inclusion could boost competition. Conversely, Imola’s mayor expressed disappointment, emphasizing the circuit’s historical value and popularity among fans and drivers. Social media posts reflect mixed sentiments, with some fans supporting Madrid while others lament Imola’s departure.

The 24-race calendar poses logistical and physical challenges for teams and drivers, particularly with a summer break of only 28 days. However, it also presents opportunities to expand the fan base, especially in emerging markets like Madrid. Scheduling conflicts, such as the Canadian Grand Prix coinciding with the Indianapolis 500, have drawn attention and may require further adjustments.
