Barcelona face a setback in their La Liga 2025/2026 title defense, as star striker Robert Lewandowski has been ruled out of their opening match against RCD Mallorca due to a thigh muscle injury.

According to the club’s official statement, Lewandowski sustained a left thigh muscle injury, sidelining him for the Joan Gamper Trophy match against Como on Sunday (10/8). Ara journalist Xavi Hernandez Navarro reports that the injury could keep the 36-year-old out for up to two weeks. Consequently, he will miss Barcelona’s La Liga opener against Mallorca on August 16, 2025. Moreover, his availability for the subsequent match against Levante the following week remains uncertain, pending recovery progress.

Lewandowski, who scored 42 goals in 52 appearances last season, was instrumental in Barcelona’s La Liga, Copa del Rey, and Supercopa de Espana triumphs. His absence poses a significant challenge for coach Hansi Flick, particularly with a demanding early-season schedule. Meanwhile, midfielder Dani Olmo is also training separately due to a minor strain, adding to the team’s concerns.

Hansi Flick has several options to cover for Lewandowski. The primary candidate is Ferran Torres, who served as the main alternative last season. Torres started in the Champions League semifinal against Inter Milan and the Copa del Rey final against Real Madrid, proving his capability as a central striker. Reports suggest Torres will share equal playing time with Lewandowski this season, with the potential to become the first-choice striker if he outperforms the Pole.

Additionally, Dani Olmo could be deployed as a false nine, though his current injury limits this option. On-loan Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford is another alternative for the central role, but his registration for the new season remains unresolved. As a result, Flick is likely to rely on Torres to lead the attack in the opening match.

Lewandowski’s absence puts added pressure on Barcelona, who are navigating a critical pre-season phase. With Raphinha emerging as a key star, the team aims to remain competitive despite missing their top scorer. However, uncertainties surrounding Rashford’s registration and Olmo’s minor injury may impact Flick’s tactics. Moving forward, Lewandowski’s swift recovery will be vital, especially for high-stakes matches like the clash against Real Madrid in late October.
