Oscar Piastri clinched his sixth victory of the 2025 Formula 1 season at the Belgian Grand Prix, widening his championship lead over teammate Lando Norris. Piastri detailed the pivotal first-lap overtake that secured his win. Despite a rain-delayed start, his strategic decision ensured dominance at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit.

Following an 80-minute delay due to heavy rain, the race commenced with a rolling start in wet conditions. Starting second, Piastri stayed close to pole-sitter Norris through the early corners. Subsequently, he executed a decisive overtake at Les Combes along the Kemmel Straight. “I knew the first lap was probably my best chance of winning,” Piastri stated. He noted that a strong exit from Turn 1 and minimal lift through Eau Rouge positioned him perfectly. “I lifted as little as possible through Eau Rouge, and it was enough,” he explained.

Piastri initially felt the rolling start decision limited his overtaking opportunities. However, his proximity to Norris early on created an opening. “When I was that close, I knew I had to lift just a bit less than Lando and keep the car on track,” he said. Despite the tricky wet conditions, especially over Eau Rouge, Piastri’s precise maneuver, aided by the tow effect, secured the lead.

As the track dried, Piastri opted for medium tires, while Norris chose hard tires, shaping the race’s dynamics. Although Norris narrowed the gap, mistakes, including at Turn 10, prevented a challenge for the lead. Piastri admitted the medium tires struggled late in the race. “The last five or six laps were tough with the mediums, but we managed well,” he remarked. His early lead allowed him to maintain control until the finish.

Piastri expressed relief and pride after overcoming a disappointing qualifying. “I was pretty disappointed with myself after yesterday, but starting second at Spa isn’t too bad,” he said. The win extended his championship lead to 14 points over Norris, reinforcing McLaren’s strength in adverse conditions.

Overall, Oscar Piastri’s triumph at the 2025 Belgian Grand Prix hinged on a bold first-lap move and adept race management. Consequently, he strengthened his championship position. The rivalry with Lando Norris is set to heat up in future races. For more Formula 1 updates, visit SPORTRIK.
