Laurent Mekies, the new team principal of Red Bull Racing, made his debut on the pit wall during the 2025 Belgian Grand Prix weekend. Stepping into the role vacated by Christian Horner after 20 years, Mekies faces the daunting task of stabilizing a team grappling with performance challenges. According to F1News, Mekies described Red Bull as a "very complex group" following his first race weekend at Spa.
Following the surprising dismissal of Christian Horner on July 9, 2025, Mekies, formerly the team principal at Racing Bulls, was appointed as CEO and team principal of Red Bull Racing. Horner, who led the team since its Formula 1 debut in 2005, guided Red Bull to six constructors’ titles and eight drivers’ championships. However, the team’s slide to fourth in the 2025 constructors’ standings prompted this leadership change.
With 24 years of Formula 1 experience, including roles at Arrows, Minardi, Toro Rosso, the FIA, and Ferrari, Mekies spent two intensive weeks at Red Bull’s Milton Keynes headquarters to familiarize himself with the team. “After two weeks at the factory, trying to meet as many people as possible, it was nice to also meet the race team and see the flow, processes, and operations,” Mekies stated, as quoted by RacingNews365.
The Spa-Francorchamps race weekend marked Mekies’ first test as team principal. Max Verstappen, Red Bull’s lead driver, secured a victory in the Sprint Race on Saturday, providing a positive start to Mekies’ tenure. However, the main Grand Prix on Sunday proved more challenging. Verstappen started and finished fourth, with controversial decisions by FIA race director Rui Marques regarding wet conditions drawing criticism from Mekies.
Mekies noted that Red Bull operates at a “mega level” with a highly organized yet complex group. “There is still a lot more for me to learn about the group, but it was a very good, full immersion weekend,” he added, emphasizing the importance of understanding the team’s dynamics to boost performance.
Red Bull faces multiple challenges, including uncertainty over Max Verstappen’s future, as he holds performance clauses in his contract until 2028 and has been linked to Mercedes. Additionally, the team is preparing a new power unit with Ford for the 2026 season, adding complexity to Mekies’ role. The departure of key personnel, such as Adrian Newey and Jonathan Wheatley, further complicates efforts to maintain competitiveness.
Nevertheless, Mekies remains optimistic. Leveraging his engineering background and leadership experience at Racing Bulls, he aims to maximize the team’s potential. His primary focus is delivering a competitive car for Verstappen to retain the star driver and return Red Bull to the top of the standings.
