Mattia Pasini, former 125cc racer and MotoGP commentator, offered deep insights into the rivalry between Francesco Bagnaia and Marc Marquez at the 2025 Austrian Grand Prix at Red Bull Ring. In an interview, Pasini also discussed MotoGP’s technological advancements and his competitive drive at age 40. He asserted that Bagnaia can match Marquez’s dominance, though with a different approach. Can Bagnaia prove his strength in the main race?
Pasini lauded the abilities of both Ducati Lenovo Team riders. “Pecco is very strong, as strong as Marc, but he operates differently,” he said. Bagnaia relies on precise bike control, while Marquez excels at overcoming technical issues. “Marc is dominating this season extraordinarily, but I don’t believe Pecco is less capable. He’s equally strong, just in a different way,” Pasini added. He expressed confidence that Bagnaia could defeat Marquez in a duel if he finds his optimal rhythm.
Pasini addressed MotoGP’s technological evolution, including the new stability control system introduced alongside traction control at Austria 2025. “These bikes are incredibly sophisticated technological marvels,” he noted. However, he criticized aerodynamics for diminishing the rider’s impact. “I’d remove aerodynamics but keep safety devices due to the bikes’ immense power,” he explained. He contrasted MotoGP with Moto2, which he views as a truer racing bike with tighter race times.
At 40, Pasini remains competitive. “I don’t feel 40. I’m still fast and have something to offer,” he stated. He referenced his strong showing in Brno, particularly in race simulations. Beyond commentating, Pasini is involved in forming a team for the World Championship. He noted MotoGP’s growing professionalism with Liberty Media’s involvement, though it leaves little room for racing’s romanticism.
With Marquez dominating 2025 and Bagnaia facing technical hurdles, Pasini remains optimistic. “Pecco can beat Marc in a duel. I never say never,” he affirmed. The Red Bull Ring battle is expected to be intense, and Bagnaia will need a flawless strategy to validate Pasini’s confidence. Will he challenge Marquez in the main race?
