Marc Marquez of the Ducati Lenovo team topped the first free practice session (FP1) of the 2025 MotoGP BWIN Grand Prix of Austria at the Red Bull Ring on Friday (15/08/2025) afternoon WIB. With a best lap time of 1:29.376, Marquez set an early benchmark, followed by teammate Pecco Bagnaia and Marco Bezzecchi of Aprilia. This in-depth analysis of FP1 results foreshadows a fiercely competitive weekend.
Marquez, the championship leader, showcased impressive speed on a circuit favoring Ducati’s strengths. His time was 0.310 seconds faster than Bagnaia’s 1:29.686 in second place. Bezzecchi, highlighting Aprilia’s potential, secured third with 1:29.762, just 0.386 seconds off Marquez. Alex Marquez of Gresini Racing and Franco Morbidelli of Pertamina Enduro VR46 completed the top five, underscoring Ducati’s early dominance.
Beyond Ducati’s stronghold, Joan Mir of Repsol Honda impressed in sixth (1:29.853), signaling progress for the Japanese team. Fabio Quartararo of Yamaha delivered a solid seventh (1:29.924), followed by Jorge Martin of Aprilia and Pedro Acosta of KTM in eighth and ninth. Enea Bastianini of Ducati closed the top ten, just 0.581 seconds behind Marquez, reflecting tight competition.
Fermin Aldeguer of Gresini Racing finished 15th (1:30.350), showing promise but needing improvement to reach Q2. Maverick Vinales of KTM, recovering from recent shoulder surgery, took a cautious approach, ending in 20th (1:30.683). The Red Bull Ring’s demanding braking zones and long straights challenged non-Ducati teams, though Honda and Yamaha showed encouraging progress.
FP1 marked the debut of the controversial anti-highside stability control system. Marquez and Acosta criticized it for reducing rider skill’s impact, despite its safety benefits. Bezzecchi, however, believes top riders will still excel. The system’s effect on performance will be closely observed in upcoming sessions.
