Mercedes has faced a significant setback in the 2025 F1 season after a strong start. The team acknowledged a critical error in the development of the W16 car, leading to a loss of competitiveness in recent races. This article examines Mercedes’ challenges and their impact on George Russell and Kimi Antonelli. Share your thoughts in the comments below!

Mercedes began the 2025 season impressively, challenging McLaren, the championship leader. Russell secured three podiums in the first four races, including second places at the Australian Grand Prix and Bahrain Grand Prix, and a victory at the Canadian Grand Prix. Antonelli, the 18-year-old rookie, also shone, finishing fourth in Australia and earning his first podium in Canada. These results positioned Mercedes as regular podium contenders through the Miami Grand Prix.

Since the European leg began at Imola, Mercedes’ performance has declined sharply, slipping from podium contention to average finishes of fifth or sixth. Russell’s win and Antonelli’s podium in Canada were outliers in an otherwise challenging period. Team representative Bradley Lord described the season as having “two clear halves.” He stated, “From Melbourne to Miami, we had consistent performance, with drivers confident in the car and contending for podiums. Since Imola, our performance has been inconsistent, with a high in Canada, but on average, we’ve been further from the leaders.”

Mercedes admitted that a misguided development path for the W16, particularly changes to the rear suspension introduced at Imola, caused instability and reduced driver confidence, especially in high-speed corners. This led to a performance drop. The team reverted to the previous suspension setup at the Hungarian Grand Prix, improving stability and enabling Antonelli to score his first European point (P10) and Russell to return to the podium. Mercedes now sits fourth in the constructors’ standings, trailing Ferrari by 24 points.

With 10 races remaining, including the Dutch Grand Prix on August 29-31, Mercedes is focusing on optimizing the W16’s setup without major upgrades, as resources shift to the 2026 car (W17). Lord emphasized that the team is “unraveling” the impact of the erroneous changes to address the car’s weaknesses. Russell remains optimistic, noting that planned upgrades for Imola could close the gap to McLaren. Can Mercedes regain their early-season form? Comment below!
