MotoGP, Sportrik Media - Yamaha has confirmed that its highly anticipated V4 MotoGP prototype will make its race debut at the San Marino Grand Prix in Misano, scheduled for September 12-14, 2025. Yamaha Racing Managing Director Paolo Pavesio announced that test rider Augusto Fernandez will pilot the new bike via a wild-card entry.

Although a V4 debut was expected this season, the decision to race at Misano, rather than Yamaha’s home round at Motegi, caught many by surprise. This move underscores Yamaha’s strong commitment to advancing their technology in MotoGP.

V4 Debut: Yamaha’s Strategic Move

During a review of Yamaha’s Hungarian Grand Prix weekend, Pavesio shared, “We are targeting Augusto Fernandez to race our new M1 V4 prototype for the first time at Misano.” He emphasized that this step is a concrete sign of Yamaha’s dedication to the future.

While the team continues to maximize performance in every race, the V4 debut marks a significant milestone. Furthermore, the decision to accelerate the debut reflects Yamaha’s confidence in the prototype’s potential, despite no lap times being released yet. Consequently, this race will serve as a critical benchmark to assess the new engine’s readiness.

Development and Testing Plans

Yamaha’s lead rider, Fabio Quartararo, will test the V4 prototype for the first time during the post-race test on Monday following the Misano event. However, Yamaha clarified that the current inline engine will only be replaced in 2026 if the V4 proves faster. Thus, the Misano debut provides essential data on the prototype’s performance in real racing conditions. Moreover, Fernandez’s wild-card entry allows Yamaha to evaluate the V4 without disrupting their regular riders’ focus. Therefore, this approach reflects a cautious yet forward-thinking strategy.

Implications for Yamaha’s MotoGP Future

The V4 debut signals Yamaha’s efforts to close the gap with competitors like Ducati and Aprilia in MotoGP. With the current inline engine, Yamaha has faced challenges in top speed. Consequently, the V4 prototype is expected to boost the team’s competitiveness. Although the outcome of this debut remains uncertain, it highlights Yamaha’s ambition to return to the forefront.
